Trenden fortsätter:
http://fibers.org/articles/news/9/11/2/1"Worldwide sales of metro Ethernet equipment are forecast to reach $18.8 billion by 2010, nearly double the sales of 2006, according to a new report from Infonetics Research.
"The metro Ethernet market picked up some steam in the last 6 months," said Michael Howard, principal analyst and co-founder of Infonetics Research. "From 2006 to 2007, port shipments will increase in every metro Ethernet equipment category we track, and we'll see revenue growth in all categories except Ethernet over DSL and cable. The slight decline in Ethernet over DSL and cable revenue is due to price erosion, as ports are up."
The convergence of networks onto IP is finally happening, thanks to the lower cost of Ethernet compared to alternative technologies like Sonet, SDH, or ATM. Even wireless networks are being converted to IP. Sales of Ethernet microwave devices – Ethernet-based equipment for backhaul in mobile networks – increased by 631% in the last year, and are expected to quadruple from 2007 to 2010.
The driving force is the takeup of high bandwidth consumer products like IPTV. The increase in subscriber numbers is motivating operators to upgrade their access networks with DSL, cable, passive optical network, and fibre-to-the-home. "
