A new report from KMI Research titled "Fiberoptics in Europe’s Broadband Access Networks, Market Analyses and Forecasts" has the following conclusions (drawn from the KMI website and Tekrati):
- The number of subscribers served by FTTP or FTTB in Europe will increase with a CAGR of about 100% from one million in 2005 to 48 million in 2010.
- Denmark, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Sweden were Europe’s FTTP innovators, having all of the one million lines in place at year-end 2005, but other markets will ramp up so that these five "pioneering" markets will be only 41% of FTTP and FTTB by 2010.
- Europe’s broadband access network operators will install more than 36 million km of cabled fiber in 2006 through 2010.
- The market for fiberoptics in Europe’s broadband access networks will increase with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 49 percent from $950 million in 2005 to $7.05 billion in 2010
- fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) systems will be the major contributor to this fiberoptics market, representing 65% of the market value in 2010. Other broadband access network architectures, such as fiber-to-the-node (FTTN) and fiber-to-the-building, or -basement (FTTB) will comprise the remaining 35%.
- FTTP networks in Europe will require a cumulative total of 25.5 million optical network terminals (ONTs) — the fiberoptic transmit-and-receive units located at the customer’s premises — from 2006 through 2010. This quantity will be more than forty times the 625,000 ONTs installed from 2003 through 2005 in Europe’s FTTP networks.
